At Rosemead, we know that children thrive when they feel safe, valued and supported, which is why pastoral care is central to school life at Rosemead and is valued equally alongside academic achievement.

Pastoral care is the responsibility of all staff members at Rosemead, with every adult playing an active role in supporting the children’s wellbeing.

Pastoral care is guided by our Pastoral Leadership Team, which consists of the Deputy Head Pastoral, the Senior Mental Health Lead, the Heads of Year and the Heads of House. This team works together to ensure that pastoral provision is consistent, proactive and responsive to the needs of our children.

Pastoral Care Across the Curriculum

Pastoral care fits into all strands of our curriculum.

Our Roots of Rosemead values system guides everything we do and children also belong to one of four houses: Lacerta, Dorado, Ursa and Aquila where they mix across year groups and develop a sense of belonging. Heads of House are visible, approachable and central to fostering community spirit, organising events and being a trusted presence for children.

Our Buddy Mentorship extends this sense of care, with older children supporting younger peers. Year 6 pupils are paired with Year 3s, while new pupils joining at any point are also given a buddy to ensure they feel welcomed and included.

We believe that mental health is just as important as physical health. Wellbeing is embedded through PSHE and extended further through:

  • Wellbeing Wednesday – a weekly time for mindfulness, reflection and activities from the My Happy Mind programme, helping children develop resilience, gratitude and positive thinking.
  • Growing Great Behaviour – our restorative approach to behaviour encourages children to learn from mistakes, repair relationships and make positive choices.
  • Assembly Programme – Weekly assemblies explore our values interactively, encouraging children to reflect on how they can show them in their learning, play and relationships. Achievements are celebrated each Friday in our Celebration Assembly, which recognises children for living out our values alongside celebrating a range of personal successes.
  • Dedicated Support – Rosemead has a Mental Health Lead and our on-site counsellor, Dave, who works with individuals, small groups and whole classes.
  • Every child at Rosemead has a voice - Through our School Council, made up of class reps and selected Year 6 pupils, children contribute to shaping school life and engaging with wider issues. Projects have included encouraging active travel, reducing food waste, and expanding playtime opportunities.

Charity and service to others are an important part of life at Rosemead. Throughout the year, children take part in fundraising events and awareness campaigns to support local and national causes. These activities not only raise valuable funds but also nurture empathy, compassion and a sense of responsibility in our pupils, helping them to understand the positive difference they can make in the world.

Within the Stalk and Branch strands of the curriculum, children focus on the essential subjects that provide a strong foundation for learning. PSHEE plays a particularly important role in our pastoral care, as the programme supports children in learning about themselves, developing healthy relationships, and understanding fundamental British values. As well as our Theology, Philosophy and Ethics (TPE) offering that helps children explore moral questions, empathy, respect for different beliefs and cultures, and develop their own sense of identity.

They take part in showcase days and projects such as work exhibitions, Look at Learning events, conventions and enterprise projects. These provide valuable opportunities for pupils to celebrate their hard work, share their learning journey with parents and the wider community, and develop important skills in presentation, collaboration and creativity.

Within our Bloom strand of our curriculum, children at Rosemead each have their own Digital Portfolio where they record their own awards and accolades, including the Roots Award where children learn a range of life skills in addtionaddition to the regular .regular. This personalised portfolio gives every child a space to track their achievements, both academic and personal. By celebrating progress and recognising effort, children develop self-confidence, resilience and pride in their learning journey. It also provides a meaningful way for teachers and parents to reflect with children on their growth and set new goals together.

Parents are key partners in their child’s wellbeing and education. We work alongside families to ensure children feel consistently supported, understood and celebrated at home and at school. This partnership helps to create the nurturing environment in which every child can thrive.
